Fear not, send disabled children to school: Fatimah | BorneoPost ...

Posted on February 22, 2012, Wednesday

KUCHING: Parents with disabled children need to discard any fear and worry in letting their children attend school and special education institutions.

Sarawak Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said such attitudes will not help the disabled children, but instead will increase their fear towards the outside world.

?Some parents are over-protective and think too much about what will happen to their children at school?this is not good,? she said at a news conference after visiting the School for Intellectually Disabled Children (Perkata), here today.

Fatimah said 98 primary schools and 40 secondary schools throughout Sarawak now provide special integration classes for students with learning disabilities.

She added that statistics show 24,310 disabled persons are now registered with the Sarawak Social Welfare Department, and the ministry expects 10,000 more to register this year.

?As of last month, 595 disabled persons registered with the department and we hope more will follow suit,? said Fatimah. ? Bernama
