America's Got Talent Recap: Stand-By Showdown

The judges have chosen from the cream of the crop. Now, with only 20 spots left for the stand-bys to battle for the live shows, it's make or break time on AGT.

While the decisions were generally obvious, a handful of head-turners succeeded.

Without ice blue contact-wearing Andrew, we instead we left to focus on our struggling bone-breaker Turf. At least Turf didn't choke under the pressure.

Who else made it through? Let's find out in THG's America's Got Talent recap!

America's Got Talent Panel

Magic - Hawley Magic had the dramatic floating act with the twist that the man was also flying, but it was an elevator act. Please set it to "Total Eclipse of the Heart" for full cheese factor. Giani with cold sores spelled Milan as "Bilan."

It seemed a bit too instantaneous than predictive. Jarett & Raja used the phrase "diamond in the desert" and I was hoping they'd make one Aladdin reference. Their act was a disappearing act with a small orchestra popping up.

It showed that they had the ability to widen their act for Vegas stage.

Advanced: Jarett & Raja, Hawley Magic

Bands - The All Ways continued their hair band spirit and still managed to make Christina Aguilera edgy. I'm still getting Straight Adam Lambert. Wordspit the Illest! had a nice combination of modern with Frank Sinatra.

The HillBenders, Dillon Gavin and Friends, and The Emily Anne Band all seemed to have mediocre reception after average performances. The Distinguished Men of Brass upped their choreography though I still can't get Busch Gardens out of my head.

Advanced: Distinguished Men of Brass, The All Ways, Wordspit the Illest!

Danger - LionDanceMe reminds me a lot of any Lion dance troupe you see during Chinese New Year, but still fun to watch. Cliff's Demo Team is a YouTube example of how to beat up potential child molesters.

Kota Sports has been shadowed by the judges BMX choices. Serengeti Steve had too much fun with a venomous cobra; I now imagine how fun he would be in bed.

Advanced: LionDanceMe

Kids - Lil Babywockee was trumped by the Turf storyline. On the other hand Lil Starr had no tapper against her and she upped her game.

Danielle Stallings was strong, the Cos Family was average, Tevin McGuire lacked eye contact, Unity in Motion did Black Swan with minor mistakes, and Williams Brothers (like Babywockee) were shadowed by the advanced Scott brothers.

They tried to up their game but it looked the same.

Advanced: Lil Starr, Danielle Stallings, Unity in Motion

Aerialists - Summer sounded like she was forced to change to the hoop; it was pretty but lacked edge from the chains except for the neck hang.

Benn Mendoza Circus combined Alice in Wonderland and Pride week. Donovan & Rebecca added a lot of danger to their act considering they did a lot of strength work and Rebecca was spinning furiously that it made me dizzy.

Advanced: Donovan & Rebecca

Rap - The rap acts seemed a bit less contemporary and more hysterical which upset the most contemporary sounding Rob Hayes. He lacked the full band that Wordspit had.

The Rhymatist sounded too 90s, Svet had some really good speed and violin skills, and Granny G had a burlesque act that was quite funny.

Burton "what cha gonna do?" Crane, used the same exact back beat and replaced the phrase with "what kind of girl do you think you are?"

Advanced: No One!

Dance Groups - Battle Born was a bit too much of the same, Old Shoes/New Shoes was fun but can't hold a full stage, and LCD performed "Bad Romance" to "Happy Together."

The Scott Brothers were much more creative than the Williams Brothers. Inspire the Fire (aka Black Glee) dressed like theme park performers, lost passports, broke ankles, and vomited on live television. I love Glee, but I dislike them.

Advanced: Inspire the Fire, The Scott Brothers, LCD (Lisa Clark Dancers)

Novelty - After having some epic visual judges choices, there were a lot of "other" in this group. David Garibaldi and his CMYK's did a lot of the same except with Elvis. I hope they go blacklight in one episode.

The ventriloquist looked even crappier. Michael Nejad player did great on the wheelbarrow then turned to the shovel. Mike Price reminded me of Matt Wilhelm last season.

The two bits should have been under dance and not "novelty" but they took it in stride. Big Barry continued to sound awful, but pandered to the judges.

Advanced: David Garibaldi and his CMYK's, Mike Price, Michael Nejad, Big Barry

Solo Dancers - The story was Turf is amazing, Stepz is his main competition, the partially deaf b-boy, and Lindsey Norton as the point of difference.

She's doing gymnastics like a beast, while all the other men were forms of hip-hop. Stepz shouldn't have used props and would have possibly ditched the shirt.

Advanced: Elusive, Lindsay, Turf

Government set for Lords reform war

LONDON (Reuters) - After 100 years of haggling, the government aims to drag parliament's unelected upper house into democracy, laying out bold plans on Wednesday that could shake the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition to its core.

The Lords, where more than 800 aristocrats, political appointees and clergy flock to pore politely over new laws, stands as a relic from an age where power came from privilege, preserved only by disagreement on how to reform it.

"The coalition stands on the brink of an historic achievement," said Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, the deputy prime minister.

"After more than 100 years of debates, cross-party talks, Green Papers, White Papers, Command Papers and a Royal Commission, we are finally introducing a bill to create a democratic and legitimate House of Lords."

By 2025, the government wants the membership of the upper house to fall to 450, with 80 percent of those elected, in stages, at the same time as members of the lower house.

An initial 120 elected members would be chosen at the next parliamentary election in 2015, the first time a member of the upper house will have been elected since it emerged in the 14th century.

WIGS AND ERMINE

The latest crack at overhauling the Lords, famous for its scarlet robes fringed with ermine fur, full-bottomed wigs and bright red leather seats, is serious business for the centre-left Lib Dems.

Britain's third party is desperate for something to brag about from a coalition partnership that has crushed its standing in opinion polls and forced it to sign up to many policies that it vehemently opposed in opposition.

However, pushing the reform through parliament may prove treacherous because many Conservatives in the fully elected Commons are deeply opposed to it. A defeat, an outside bet for now, could be fatal for the coalition.

"I'm totally against Lords reform. We think that it works fairly well as it is at the moment, and that the level of expertise in the Lords could never be replicated in an elected chamber," said Conservative lawmaker Philip Davies.

Giving a taste of the battle ahead, an aide to Conservative leader Prime Minister David Cameron warned the party to get in line, saying voting against the reform would be "an interesting career move".

The spectacle of the current Lords - who once had the power to veto budgets but now play second fiddle to the lower house - scrutinising the blueprint for their own downfall will also offer a bizarre sideshow to the tussle.

Under the proposals, the role of the upper house in reviewing bills would not change, nor would it challenge the primacy of the Commons.

Its distinctive mandate would stem from the fact that most of its members would be elected for 15-year terms under a proportional system different from the winner-takes-all system used for lower house elections, and represent larger constituencies. A fifth of members would be appointed by an independent commission on the basis of particular expertise.

LOWER HOUSE UNDERMINED?

But some argue that the new upper house could eventually threaten the power and purpose of the lower house if its members were chosen by the public.

"These proposals will completely undermine the authority of the Commons and sweep away the grounds on which that authority is based," said John Reid, a Labour peer who held ministerial posts as an elected member of parliament in Tony Blair's government.

"Anyone who believes they can introduce a new chamber of elected senators with a term three times as long as MPs', and constituencies much larger than MPs', without that becoming the superior house is deluding themselves."

Labour opposition politicians, although broadly in favour of change, are licking their lips, spying an opportunity to make mischief and put pressure on the coalition as the bill passes through parliament over the coming year.

The longer Labour can keep the proposals trapped in the parliamentary maze of revisions, votes and debates required to pass it into law, the more painful and damaging the process could prove for the coalition parties.

But a Labour source who declined to be named dismissed suggestions that the opposition's desire to extend the bill's timetable was intended to cause havoc.

"(Labour leader) Ed Miliband has made very clear that we want to see this get through the (House of) Commons, we want to see this get to the Lords. He's said quite clearly we will not kill this bill ...

"This is a piece of significant constitutional reform. We have to make sure it has the proper length of time to be debated on the floor of the houses of parliament."

The All-Purpose Writer ? The Brimmer Files

(Jason Miller)

On Tuesday night I e-mailed the link to Siobhan Hunter?s review of Last Summer at the Marmont to the author of Q, knowing he would particularly enjoy it since he lived at the Chateau Marmont for a spell during the 1970s when he was a Hollywood screenwriter and script doctor. In the e-mail I also apologized for not meeting the self-imposed deadline of June 16 for the new draft of the screenplay adaptation of his novel. He wrote back Wednesday morning:

What a perceptive, well written review. I look forward to reading the play.

Don?t worry about ["Q"]. Take your time. I?m in my own delays as well with this weird deconstructed fiction-memoir or whatever it is.

The most important things are your health and putting coin on the table.

I was glad he told me not to worry because I?ve been doing a lot of that lately. In the last few weeks severe arthritic pain in my hands has prevented me from getting much writing done but it has resulted in a lot of thinking about writing, One thing I had been kicking my ass over a lot lately is why I have not been as productive in the short fiction market as I was between 2004-2010, starting with work for L.A. Stories. And what I?ve come to realize is that, as a writer, short fiction and flash fiction was a growing ?phase? I was going through and I burned through it, having met all of the challenges that I set for myself and, seeing no further challenges to the form, I moved on. Much as I did with my Martin Brimmer phase, and the time I spent penning personal ruminative essays for the likes of Dead Drunk Dublin and Strike the Root.

Last week an organization ? I hate to be vague there but the situation calls for it ? conducted a conference call with many of its members to consider bringing me into their circle of secrecy for an investigative journalism piece; one member warned that the group did not have a good track record with journalists, at which point another chimed in and said, ?I?ve done some research on this guy. He?s not just a journalist. He?s a writer.?

Which is what I am. An all-purpose writer. I go where the money and my interest is. This time last year my interest was in radio plays ? an antiquated form, I know, but also one I know that I can master so I?m going to meet the challenge ? and I will get back to that as soon as I am able to finish the screenplay for ?Q?, not only another personal challenge but a pet project of mine for, literally, decades.

And, in the interim, there?s the journalism project to pursue, the type of project that often falls into my lap unsolicited as a result of being an ?all-purpose writer? and not one who easily fits into a niche. My protagonist from Last Summer at the Marmont, Lewis Hogue, explains some of the exhaustive wheeling and dealing that goes into the business during a phone call early in the first act:

LEWIS (INTO PHONE)

Jack? Lew Hogue here, buddy. How the hell are ya? ? Yeah? ? Yeah? ? You?re shitting me. I haven?t seen Bobby in a coon?s age. How is he? ? Yeah ? Yeah?? ? ? (laughs)

That?s the old Bobby I know and love. Send my regards next time you talk to him. Listen, I?ve got something here that might be up your alley. I just bought the life story rights of a certain fringe celebrity who?s been?in the limelight a bit recently ? Who? Well, he?s the former gay lover of a big time movie star who shall remain nameless ?

(It?s impossible for LEWIS to stand still now. He is circling the room like a buzzard, cell phone glued to his ear, as he talks.)

LEWIS (INTO PHONE) (CONT?D)

Yeah, that?s him. I didn?t know you read the Enquirer.?(laughs) Listen, this is no joke. The guy has led an interesting life and it would make a great TV movie. He?s more than just a peter puffer to Mr. Boffo Box Office. For one thing, he used to run drugs for Eddie Nash back in the Eighties, turned state?s evidence against Nash, went into the Witness Protection Program and ? Huh? ? What? ? Yeah, I engineered an exclusive to the Enquirer, which netted me five grand, I don?t mind saying, and I managed to get an eight week embargo on the story down to four so I want to strike while the fire?s hot, so to speak. Or is that anvil? ? Huh? ? No, I was just wondering out loud. Is it strike while the fire is hot or while the anvil is hot? Anvil would make more sense, I think.

(LEWIS reacts to a demure knock at the door.)

LEWIS (INTO PHONE) (CONT?D)?When? ? Hold on, let me check my schedule ?

(He retrieves a Day Runner from the bed, paws through the pages)

LEWIS (INTO PHONE) (CONT?D)?Tuesday at one at The Ivy. Yeah, I think I can swing that.

(He closes the Day Runner without making a notation.)

LEWIS (INTO PHONE) (CONT?D) I?ll see you then. And I?ll bring along the contract so you can see it?s all on the level. This could really be something.

(Another knock at the door. A visibly annoyed LEWIS walks to the door while still talking on the cell.

LEWIS (INTO PHONE) (CONT?D) ?No, it was a dollar option?just to keep it all legal, you understand?but this guy can?t sneeze without me owning the snot that comes out of his nose. I?m not gonna make the same mistake I did with Jason Miller. If I?d had the rights to that goddamn play sewn up, Sorvino wouldn?t have beaten me to the punch.

**********

Less than three months after writing that moment I penned the first draft of the play Go Irish: The Purgatory Diaries of Jason Miller, in 2004. I guess you can say that was my ?playwright phase?.

94% Marley

Director Kevin MacDonald and co-producer Ziggy Marley bring forth the most definitive look back at the life of Bob Marley, in the new documentary "Marley". From the formation of "The Wailers" and the comings and goings of different members of the band (including Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff), to Marley's dealings in Rastafarian and how it bled into his Reggae music; and also from his controversial lifestyle punctuated by being a "womanizer" (eleven children from seven different women) to his humanitarian nature, this in-depth (two and a half hour) documentary will immensely satisfy fan and novice alike. I, like many other younger American non-Rasta's, had grown up knowing Bob Marley for his more commercially catchy hits and from his countless depictions on a multitude of shirts worn by numerous Bay Area potheads. But, being a novice, going into this film I wasn't particularly interested in seeing a two and a half hour movie about the life and times Bob Marley. A story I thought I knew, and had heard, countless times before. But that notion changed rather abruptly within the first few minutes of this movie. And by the end, due to the brilliant investigative journalistic nature of MacDonald which elevates "Marley" from an average movie to a MUST SEE documentary, audiences who see this film will walk out with an in-depth appreciation for the man who wrote some of the most poetic and revolutionary lyrics in music history. "Marley" is the no holds barred dissection of a particular subject (or subject matter) which fans of great documentaries will crave (and in fact, was nowhere to be found in the films of 2011). And for a documentary that was originally supposed to be directed by Martin Scorsese, after seeing what MacDonald has accomplished here, it would be hard to imagine "Marley" being more perfectly executed in anybody else's hands. What truly sets "Marley" apart from other bio-documentaries and A&E specials is how, in a very PBS way, MacDonald uses a seemingly endless amount of archival footage, as well as interviews with almost everybody (still alive) who had anything to do with Marley's upbringing and his life as a world famous musician, as the narration. It was quite apparent that MacDonald had full access to any and all information he wanted, and as far as I could see, he thankfully took complete advantage of this fact. As audiences, we hear from Marley's family and peers about how as a young boy he was an outcast because of his mixed-race. We also hear from notable Jamaican artists and record executives, who saw his maturation into a musician that worked to bridge the gaps, not only in Jamaica (during times of war) but nationwide as well. In this way, MacDonald enables audiences to intimately know Bob Marley on every level (get your mind out of the gutter). But all the pure information aside, what MacDonald does very well here is not creating a documentary which totally sanctifies Bob Marley, much as many movies (tributes) do when celebrities with checkered pasts die. MacDonald captures recollections of Marley from both those who loved the man and those who thought him to be nothing more than a womanizing zealot, who was sadly not as politically motivated as he should have been. Final Thought: Overall "Marley" is a brilliant example of an archetype onto how all biographical documentaries should be made. Grade "A" filmmaking, in conjunction with a larger than life subject (subject matter) is what elevates "Marley" into one of the most entertaining two and a half hour documentaries I have ever seen. If you are at all a Bob Marley fan (casual or otherwise) and if you are able to, see "Marley", any way you can, before Hollywood makes a more commercialized (legacy ruining) feature film version of his life in a few years; starring Mekhi Phifer no doubt. Do-It-Yourself cheap beds for sale Home Improvement Tips To Save You Money

Whether you are going to remodel a bedroom or bathroom, or even if you have decided to give your entire house a much-needed makeover, you are sure to gain insight from this article.

A breakfast bar makes a charming and functional addition to your home. If your kitchen and den already run together, you can easily add one that will fit nicely into the open space that you enjoy. You can add a quaint breakfast bar with counter and chairs for around five hundred dollars.

When designing a renovation for your home, consider the specific circumstances of your house. There are many renovations you could do to your home that wouldn?t fit given the weather conditions or other environmental factors of your area. Make sure the changes you want to make don?t rely on a change in the local climate as well.

Focus on exterior lighting for your next home improvement project. Installing an outdoor motion detector is a good choice; the sensor will ensure that the light only comes on when you need it to. Not only does this save you money on energy bills, but the motion detector is also a good security feature. It alerts you if anyone is walking around your property.

Instead of trying to update bathrooms to go with current trends, it is a better idea to keep things neutral. The reason for that is the fact that styles change double beds and there is a chance that what looks good now, may be considered dated at the time you wish to sell your home.

Storage projects are an excellent way to get your feet wet in the home improvement process. If you have a broom closet in your home, consider making it into a small pantry. It is easy to attach small racks to the inside of the door and create a place for canned goods and spices. If you are able to add a deeper shelf, you can also store boxes or kitchen appliances that don?t see much use.

Never try to use makeshift solutions or inferior equipment to replace tools you need for your home improvement project. While you may be tempted to save time and money this way, the equipment you attempt to replace is expensive or hard to get hold of for a reason. Using stopgap measures can give you unsatisfactory results or even expose you to danger.

If the outside of your home is looking a bit drab and old, why not put new outside light fixtures up. There are a lot of outside light fixtures available on the market and they all have something special. Putting a new light on your home adds a touch of class, elegance and style.

Learning how to remove a sink trap is a valuable skill. It can help you remove anything that has been dropped down the drain which is not an uncommon occurrence. If you do drop something down the drain don?t run water in it until you can remove the trap.

To increase energy efficiency and save significantly on your utility bills, consider replacing single pane windows with newer energy divan bed efficient ones. The investment you make in new windows now will easily pay for itself over time as your utility bills will be lower and, of course, your home will be more comfortable.

Switch out your cupboard doors! OK, we all can?t afford new cabinets. If we just change out the doors, however, we get a new look for a very reasonable price. Just make sure you carefully measure to determine what you need before you take the plunge. Installation is easy. Just screw them in place!

If you are going to do home improvements to an entire property and not just one room, make sure you have a concise idea from the outset of what you are wanting to achieve. Making major alterations to plans mid project will not only cost money, but could also lead to issues with any contractors working for you.

One of the critical elements to doing any home improvement is to have the proper materials and equipment to do the job. Before starting any home improvement project, it would be a good idea to read about it some and figure out what is going to be needed to complete it. Another great resource is asking questions at the local home improvement store, they also sometimes offer classes on basics of home improvement.

A carefully selected home improvement project can enhance the appearance of any house and add to its value as well. By remembering the tips and tricks in this article, you will be better prepared to take on an ambitious home improvement project that can create a more inviting place to live for yourself and your family.

How To Craft Ideas For Kids ? Rainbows Of Love - How To Do Things

Kids activities can be fun for the entire family and creative ideas are readily available. Many common items around the home can be transformed into children?s art work, and Q-tips are just one item that is versatile in crafts. The cotton swabs make a perfect paint brush and are the right size for young hands.

Creating rainbow cards with the kids is a fun family activity that is perfect for any time of the year. Rainbows are especially popular during the spring, however, the bright colors can easily be transferred to Christmas, fall or summer craft ideas.

To begin the following kids activities, you will need these supplies:
-Several cotton swabs for each child.
-Masking and scotch tape
-Glue dots
-Six colors of paint for a rainbow, but any colors work great for holiday cards
-Newspaper, plates, paper stock and wet cloths.

The plate makes a perfect place for kids to store several colors. The cotton swabs are an ideal brush, and covering a table with newspaper protects the finished surface. Little kids are notorious mess makers, and this is part of the fun. Having a variety of wet cloths helps kids keep clean and prevents the home from turning into a disaster area. Many kids like to keep their fingers clean, and wet cloths are perfect for this purpose too.

Creating a Rainbow Card
1. The first step is to prepare the work surface and cotton swabs. Because there are traditionally six different colors in a rainbow, it is ideal to use six swabs for each child. This leaves a swab for each color and reduces the mess. Putting a piece of masking tape over the cotton surface makes it easy to paint the cards and allows a broader brush stroke.

2. Card stock should be prepared by cutting it in half, and the remainder should be folded to produce a card shape.

3. Each cotton swab should be dipped in its own rainbow color. Some kids like to dip all of the swabs at the same time, but others prefer to work on a single color. Either option is perfect and up to the family.

4. The swabs should be dipped in paint and swiped across the paper in the shape of a rainbow. Using a different color for each course is ideal, and kids can develop their own artistic touches to create a unique rainbow card.

5. The rainbow can be left as is, or it can be enhanced with cotton puffs or sparkle paint. Adding some cotton to the bottoms adds an impression of clouds, and there is always the rumor of a pot of gold at the rainbow?s end.

Other Painting Techniques
The cotton swabs work great when the tip is taped, but this is not necessary. Using tape produces a bolder brush stroke because the cotton absorbs a lot of the paint.

Using one hand to paint all of the lines at the same time is another technique. This method is perfect for kids and is easy to do. Simply hold one swab between each finger, and the rainbow is finished in a single pass.

Kids activities are a great way to share with the entire family, and rainbow cards are perfect for sick relatives, holiday events and birthday parties. Everyone enjoys seeing the creativity of children, and bright cards warm a dreary day.

A rainbow is a beautiful creation in the sky, and kids love the bright colors. Making cards at home is a fun activity that is perfect for the entire family. Most homes have the required supplies lying around, and there is no need to make an expensive trip to the crafts store.

During cell division, each daughter cell receives a complete copy of genetic information from the mother cell. To this end, the genetic information is provided in the form of chromosomes visible under the microscope. The chromosomes are separated and distributed to daughter cells with time. ?We knew for some time that the Aurora enzymes play an essential role in these processes,? says Silke Hauf. ?They control the compaction of chromosomes and regulate their attachment to the spindle of the machine.? Like many other regulatory enzymes, enzymes Aurora trigger changes in the cell by setting the phosphate groups to other proteins.

Cannon.fm Launches Local Music Streaming Radio App

appIn an attempt to watch their development, I've been keeping tabs on a small Columbus OH startup called Cannon.fm. I first talked with them several weeks ago before their product launch, and have been interviewing them occasionally, to see how they are adapting, changing, improving, revising their business model and product. That product ? a streaming radio iOS app called Cannon.fm that is specifically for local musicians ? launched over the weekend. How is it working out? It's not perfect, I can't lie, but I am still loving it.

Dangerous wildfires spread in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? Flames forced thousands of Colorado residents from their homes over the weekend and disrupted vacation plans for countless visitors as smoke shrouded some of the state's top tourist destinations, including majestic Pike's Peak and tranquil Estes Park.

Colorado is having its worst wildfire season in a decade, with more than a half dozen forest fires burning across the state's parched terrain. Some hotels and campgrounds are emptying ahead of the busy Fourth of July holiday.

One of the newest fires, a blaze near Colorado Springs, grew to more than 5 square miles Sunday after erupting just a day earlier and prompting evacuation orders for 11,000 residents and an unknown number of tourists.

Officials had put the fire at 6 square miles but reduced the estimated Monday after more precise mapping.

Firefighters braced for hot temperatures and high winds on the fire lines.

On Sunday, the fire sent plumes of gray and white smoke over the area that obscured at times Pikes Peak, the most-summited high-elevation mountain in the nation and inspiration for the song "America The Beautiful."

Winds had started to push smoke away from Colorado Springs and evacuations orders were lifted for the 5,000 residents of nearby Manitou Springs, but area residents and tourists still watched nervously as haze wrapped around the peak.

"We're used to flooding and tornadoes, nothing like this," said Amanda Rice, who recently moved to the area from Rock Falls, Ill. Rice, her husband, four children and dog. They left a Manitou Springs hotel late Saturday.

Rice, scared when she saw flames, took her family to the evacuation center before she was told to go.

"It was just this God-awful orange glow. It was surreal. It honestly looked like hell was opening up," Rice said Sunday.

In Utah, hundreds of residents evacuated ahead of a 39-square-mile blaze that had destroyed at least some structures. Fire officials weren't sure how many were destroyed, or whether they were homes; sheriff's officials estimated late Sunday it could be as many as 30 structures.

Even while other large fires burn across the West, Colorado's blazes have demanded half the nation's firefighting fleet, according to Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. He said C-130 military transport planes from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs would begin assisting Monday.

"People recognize this is going to take a big push" to extinguish, Hickenlooper said Sunday from a Colorado Springs grocery store, where volunteers were passing out burritos, sandwiches and drinks to 350 firefighters working near Pikes Peak.

A statewide ban on open campfires and private fireworks has been in place for more than a week.

While no homes were reported damaged in the Colorado Springs-area fire, a forest fire near Rocky Mountain National Park destroyed structures near the mountain community of Estes Park. The Larimer County Sheriff's Office said Sunday that 22 homes and two outbuildings had been burned.

The Estes Park fire destroyed vacation cabins and closed the most commonly used entrance to the park. Clouds of smoke blew toward the 102-year-old Stanley Hotel that inspired Stephen King to write "The Shining."

Also over the weekend, residents of a subdivision near the northern Colorado city of Fort Collins learned that 57 more homes in their neighborhood had been lost to the High Park Fire, which already had claimed 191 homes, authorities said.

The High Park Fire is the second-largest wildfire and among the most expensive in Colorado's history. It has scorched more than 130 square miles and was just 45 percent contained on Sunday, The Denver Post reported.

With Colorado midway through its worst wildfire season in a decade, travelers have seen some of their favorite sites closed to the public, obscured by smoke and haze. Some travelers were awoken with evacuation orders.

Families planning whitewater rafting trips or visits to the stunning red-rock formations in Garden of the Gods park in Colorado Springs were instead spending their vacations passing out bottled water and setting up cots in evacuee centers.

They included Mark Stein, of Morristown, N.J., whose family arrived after midnight Sunday at their Manitou Springs hotel for a week of whitewater rafting and sightseeing.

"We were sleeping for 15 minutes when they started knocking on the door ? a day from hell," Stein said of the day of travel. With his wife and two sons, Stein spent the first night of his vacation setting up cots for more than 200 evacuees who slept at the school.

"I think it's the best vacation ever. This is what the real world is about. There's a lot of people that need help," Stein said.

Also Sunday, a brushfire that began near Elbert, about 50 miles southwest of Denver, quickly spread to about 60 acres, forcing the evacuation of about 100 residents.

Elsewhere, firefighters contended with windy and heat as they battled wildfires in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

? Also in Utah, officials report progress on a 9-square-mile wildfire around Saratoga Springs, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.

? In Montana, two wildfires were burning in the southwest part of the state, including the fast-moving Antelope Fire, which started Saturday afternoon about 10 miles north of Whitehall and had grown to 462 acres on Sunday. About 100 firefighters were battling that blaze.

? In Arizona, the U.S. Forest Service said late Sunday that containment against the Poco Fire, just outside of Young, is up to 65 percent and remains under 12,000 acres. Officials say many of the firefighting resources are being released to their home units or to other fire assignments.

Wildfires leave Colorado tourism high and dry

On Monday FEMA authorized the use of federal funds to fight the fires in Colorado that are burning across the state. The most recent fire, in Colorado Springs, resulted in 11,000 evacuations over the weekend. Miguel Almaguer reports.

By Jack Chesnutt
NBC News

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- ?After two weeks of around-the-clock work, firefighters are starting to gain the upper hand on the High Park fire near Fort Collins, Colo. But even as some of the residents are allowed to return to their homes, there is another casualty from the 100-square-mile blaze: Northern Colorado?s annual influx of summer visitors seeking clean air and whitewater rivers.

Jim Clark, executive director of the Ft. Collins Convention and Visitors Bureau, can see a smoky haze over the Roosevelt National Forest from his location downtown.

?The bad news is...we?re known for our outdoor recreation," he said. "A lot of that at the present time is closed.?

Clark?s office is handling many out-of-state calls from people who have questions about the smoke from the fire.? For the past several?weeks?the Colorado Department of Public Health has issued air quality health alerts because of the dense smoke along a 200-mile corridor from Colorado Springs in the south up to the Wyoming border. This week, the smoke has been less of an issue.

?We have lots of things for them in town -- breweries, shops ... everything is still open," Clark said. "But, there are some folks who would have visited us that probably will stay away.?

Over the weekend, new flames near Colorado Springs forced thousands to evacuate -- one of several fires emptying campgrounds and hotels across the parched state.?

Preston Harrington and Darrel Sellers,?of?Lake Charles, La., had planned to climb nearby Pikes Peak. Then they got evacuated from their hotel.?

"We're used to the hurricanes and evacuating and what not. And we come up here and expect good weather and since we've been here they've had hailstorms, and now forest fires -- it just reminds us of being back home," Harrington said.?

Bill Fee, shopkeeper at the Nature of Things Chainsaw Art in Manitou Springs, Colo., said it's devastating for local businesses, especially the weekend before the Fourth of July when they tend to have the most customers.?

"I do worry for Colorado this year for tourism through the whole entire state -- not just the small town of Manitou, which relies completely on tourism -- it affects [businesses] across the board."

Clark says it will be weeks or even months before any hard numbers are available to calculate the loss of visitors due to the fire.

Rafting companies offer refunds

The losses have already started for Pat Legel, owner of Wanderlust Adventure Rafting in Bellevue, Colo. Legel has spent what should have been a busy start to the rafting season dusting off his rafts and life jackets. ?This is historical. This is the longest we?ve been out of business.?

Legel?s company offers trips down the Cache la Poudre River, one of the most popular whitewater rivers in Colorado. The fire has cut off access to the river where it runs through the burn zone. Wanderlust is one of six local outfitters which have suspended rafting on the Poudre since June 9.

Legel said his heart goes out to the more than 200 residents who have lost their homes to the fire.? But, for his business, the hardest part is making the daily calls to customers to let them know the river canyon is closed and to arrange refunds on their rafting fees.

?It?ll be a survival season, if we can get back some time early July. If not, we?ll have to maybe lay some people off and get a loan to carry us through next year.?

Legel started the company in 1982. He?s now 65.

"I don?t think I will see the landscape along the river recover in my lifetime,? he said.?

Tourists changing plans

Jane Servi had house guests for the weekend at her Larimer County home and had to?scramble to make new plans for weekend activities. ?She was looking forward to showing the visitors from Boston a Colorado whitewater adventure. But her Poudre River rafting trip was one of hundreds cancelled by the fire. Eventually she found an alternative rafting location nearly 70 miles away.?It was disappointing, she said, but she's more concerned "about the people who are up there whose houses have been destroyed, and people who have been displaced."

Last week "NBC Nightly News" found Grant Houx, owner of St. Peter?s Fly shop in Fort Collins, standing thigh-deep in the Poudre River about 10 miles downstream from the fire. He was whipping a seven-foot-long fly rod through air that tastes like smoke. The water runs clear and cool here, for now. But when late summer rains come, the soot, ash and charred underbrush from 70,000 scorched acres will wash down the Poudre and smaller streams like a black tide.? Not good for trout and other native fish.

?'Concern? is one word. We don?t know exactly what the effects of that soot will be,? he said.?

Houx?s fishing guide service has had ?a few? fire-related cancellations. He explains that fishing is still good on several other rivers in the area unaffected by the fire.

Fires of 2012 follow record year for Colorado tourism?

According to the Colorado Tourism Office, 59.7 million visitors came to the state in 2011. They spent $10.7 billion. Larimer County, where the High Park Fire continues to burn, represents 2.7 percent of statewide visitor spending.

Colorado Tourism Office chief Al White says statewide reservations are up ?double-digits over last summer? but acknowledges the impact of the fires in northern Colorado and Fort Collins. The hope is that tourists understand that even a 100 square mile fire represents less than one tenth of one percent of the state of Colorado.

?The High Park fire is a tragedy, but there is still a lot to see and do in Colorado," White said. "And for now, people are still making plans to come here.?

NBC's Vicky Collins contributed to this report.

How You Can Stop And Employ Meditation Techniques In A Fast ...

The world went mental with sounds going off each and every second you live and breathe. The upheaval of daytime traffic gets you out of your bed. A ringing tone from a cellphone calls out to you when you aim to spend quality time with a black plus heady (just the way you want it) cup of Joe. A blast of alarm out of your sleek brand new tablet nags you when you head for the sanctuary of the bathroom. A friend and even the landlord might intrude upon your morning having a few complaint or request. And this is only the beginning of your day.

If you eventually manage to get away from your apartment, you?ll run smack into a cacophony of-man-made and machine-made-sounds that really pick at your thoughts, your spirit, causing you to be anxious and in a state of consistent anxiousness. This is not the way your life needs to unfold. This is simply not the way your recollections really should be generated. This may not be an excellent means to amble through your everyday existence. Thus, browse through health and fitness blogs to find meditation techniques that could help you clear your head from the frustrating sound and have much healthier days.

Meditation is a mind-body training that will help experience conscious rest, which really brings about stress relief. There are many distinctive processes to use and you also don?t normally need to have a guru to point you in the direction of enlightenment, but his way definitely will further increase your concentration or vastly broaden the free circulation of your insights.

Meditation techniques for anxiety is going to be as basic as consuming 15 to 20 minutes away from your day to take a seat, loosen up and shut your eyes, and start a silent degree of awareness. It can be as rigorous as the Vipassana meditation that?s undertaken about 10 days as you refrain from writing, talking, and reading so as to close your eyes in a quiet area for 10 to 15 minutes and stay very aware of your breathing.

The wide range of meditative techniques can deal with a variety of physical concerns and psychological upheavals. Whenever your days are taken over by eight to 10 hours of computer time, you can increase optic function by taking a crack at trataka, often known as yogic gaze. To practice, give attention to a certain non-moving object (your studly man or hot woman may not be reliable ? they?ll keep moving around) at a distinct distance. Secure your eyes (hence, the name) until your eyes close and the picture remains. Relax your breathing and open your eyes once again. Alternate the opening and closing of your own eyes a couple of times before you decide to conclude the trataka.

The Mayo Clinic has recommended that meditation is among the helpful health and fitness guidelines that can help out with elevated blood pressure, hypersensitivity, asthma, sleep problems, heart disease, as well as pain, among other things. The medical community has, for years, endorsed making use of meditation to deal with pain-related health problems similar to arthritis. Meditation techniques for pain may include a mixture of transcendental meditation and yoga breathing, or mantra meditation (silently echoing a pleasing statement) and guided meditation.

Reduced stress, inner serenity, rejuvenated mind and body? inner peace. The many advantages of meditation are countless. In a world that gets you usually active, the necessity of using a minute alone to yourself to have clarity and inner tranquility will let you get up a lot better in the mornings and retire restfully at night. And the distractions, the hubbub in your head may ultimately leave you in peace.

Timing of ADHD medication affect academic progress

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? A team of researchers led by an epidemiologist at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and University of Iceland has found a correlation between the age at which children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) begin taking medication, and how well they perform on standardized tests, particularly in math.

The study, titled, "A Population-Based Study of Stimulant Drug Treatment of ADHD and Academic Progress in Children," appears in the July, 2012, edition of Pediatrics, and can be viewed online on June 25. Using data from the Icelandic Medicines Registry and the Database of National Scholastic Examinations, the researchers studied 11,872 Icelandic children born between 1994 and 1996. The children started medication for ADHD at different times between fourth and seventh grades.

The findings showed that children who began drug treatment within 12 months of their fourth-grade test declined 0.3 percent in math by the time they took their seventh-grade test, compared with a decline of 9.4 percent in children who began taking medication 25-to-36 months after their fourth-grade test.

The data also showed that girls benefited only in mathematics, whereas boys had marginal benefits in math and language arts.

"Children who began taking medications immediately after their fourth-grade standardized tests showed the smallest declines in academic performance," said the study's lead author Helga Zoega, PhD, Post Doctoral Fellow of Epidemiology at Mount Sinai's Institute for Translational Epidemiology. "The effect was greater in girls than boys and also greater for children who did poorly on their fourth grade test."

Stimulants are widely used in the United States as a therapeutic option for children with inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity associated with ADHD. The medications are less frequently used in Europe, although their use in Iceland most closely resembles the U.S. Long-term follow-up studies of stimulant use and academic performance are scarce, according to the researchers.

Hands-Off: Microsoft Surface review

After seeing yet?another ?hands-on? review of the Microsoft Surface tablet, I thought it would be interesting to shed more light on what exactly the journalists who assembled in Hollywood this week for the Surface launch event?actually got to do with the tablets. In short, not a lot. Come along as I explain the hands-off reality of what I saw.

Anticipation, It?s Making Me Wait?

When everyone checked-in before the event started, they were given small plastic cards with a time printed on them. We weren?t told what these were for. Mine said 5:50pm. The purpose became clear after the event ended, though I think we had a pretty good idea what they were for. These were to allow us some close-up time with Microsoft Surface.

When the event was over, I was really looking forward to when my appointment would come around. I had about an hour wait, so there was plenty of time for anticipation. I walked around, had some nibbles and shot a few photos with my Windows Phone (I believe in accessorizing properly). Look at how pretty Microsoft made the stage, just like a big Surface:

Seriously, I was standing in the back of the empty hall talking with the guy who helped design all this. He was rightly proud of making it look nice.

The Surface Will See You Now

But enough stage dressing. My time approached. I gathered over near the front, where we were allowed to go through in groups of about eight. I had a chance to finally meet Ed Bott, a long-time Windows guru I?ve followed, who promised me that he?d be delivering a piece to help me, a Windows 7 user not liking with Metro-happy Windows 8, on how to fix all that (and he delivered). Bott?s own impressions of Surface from his tour is here. Also in our group was, I realized today, Mary Branscombe, who?s ?hands on? piece today tipped me over the edge.

Branscombe is hardly the only journalist who came out of the tour we were given and wrote a ?hands-on? story. I?m looking at you?TechCrunch, The Verge, AnandTech?and Mashable, among others. ?Hands-on? was used in plenty of headlines, and that irked me, because I know we weren?t given any real hands-on with the device at all. That is, unless you believe holding an iPad or a Kindle Fire that?s not turned on is ?hands-on.? That?s pretty much what it was like with Surface.

The Keyboard You Can?t Type On

After we entered, we went to the first station, where there were two guys holding Surface tablets and telling us how awesome the keyboards were. There were also a variety of keyboards spread out before us in pretty colors. Here are two of them I moved together, one of the super-flat ones on top of a more traditional keyboard with keys that actually moved:

The flat keyboard is really flat. Those iPad covers from Apple? Those are slightly thicker, I?d say. When you push on this keyboard, there?s no give like you?d expect from a regular keyboard. It?s like trying to type by pushing on a paperback book.

Now, the Microsoft guys were rambling on about all the awesome stuff that makes these keyboards work as well ? if not better ? than a real keyboard, all the same stuff we?d already heard about an hour before during the main event. I wanted to try one of the damn things. You know, like hook it up to a Surface and see it for myself.

Because, you know, the keyboard is the main feature here. Aside from that keyboard, Surface just seems to be another Windows 8 tablet. The keyboard is the edge that Microsoft?s apparently hoping will ?wow? consumers, even though you?d think putting a ?real? computer in a tablet would be ?wow? enough.

I asked one of the Microsoft guys if we could try the keyboard with the Surface he was holding, one that wasn?t on. Nope. Why not? He just kind of shrugged and said he didn?t know.

What the hell? You?ve dragged 100 journalists out in the middle of Los Angeles in the afternoon (with LA traffic, imagine crawling slowly on broken glass), made a big deal about this keyboard on stage and no one can actually try it? To see for ourselves how well it works? Yeah, that wasn?t encouraging.

After seven minutes (according to the time stamps between my photos), we were moved to the next station, where the innards of the Surface were spread-out. That was to show us what we were being told, that there?s this awesome material that?s awesomely wonderful blah blah blah. Oh, and the kickstand makes a carefully engineered clicking sound.

My Bike Has A Kickstand Too; That?s Not Why I Bought It

Now I?m thinking seriously? We?re going to get excited over the kickstand? Yes, my new iPad cover (and I mean a cover for the ?new iPad? not a new cover for my iPad) doesn?t seem to clip as well as the one for my iPad 2 did. I?d like it to elevate the iPad more on those rare occasions I?m trying to maybe eating and also reading the iPad. Usually, I?m just holding it in my hand. That means I don?t care that much about a kickstand, much less one that has perfect-pitch sound.

What I did care about was that this station had a keyboard hooked up to a Surface. Of course, the Surface wasn?t actually on. But at least I could get a sense of what it was like to open it. In fact, I was?desperately?trying to open it as we were being ushered away, because I kept feeling like it opened ?backwards? from what I?d expect:

See, the keyboard is light, unlike the keyboard of a regular laptop. So, you want it to be on the bottom, which means lifting a heavier console up, and it felt odd, kind of backwards. But maybe if I?d had more than 30 seconds to try, I?d have gottten used to it.

No Touching!

There was no time for that, however. You see, as the last group of the day, there was absolutely no one behind us. That meant, oh ? yeah, there was no reason to rush us other than to keep our time as limited with the Surface ? well parts of Surface ? as possible.

No matter. At the last table were live, working units. As with the previous tables, this station had two Microsoft guys behind it. This is how we interacted with the units:

That?s not a journalist holding Surface. It?s one of the Microsoft guys. They?d swing them around with a pretty picture on the front, I guess so we?d go ?ooh? and ?ahh.? If we were lucky, we were allowed to hold one for a few seconds. But if you tried to do anything with it, bang, it was gone.

Believe me, I know. I tried. I had kept hearing everyone on Twitter screaming about how no one at Microsoft was saying what the screen resolution was. Since it was such a big uber-secret, I figured I?d try to find out.

After asking repeatedly if I could hold one ? I felt like a seven-year-old, ?please can I hold it, please can I try, would you mind if I try? ? one of the Microsoft guys gave me a shot. I brought up the Start screen by hitting the Windows button on the front of the tablet, hit Desktop to get to the Windows 8 desktop, did a long press guessing that would bring up the Screen Resolution setting and it did ? at which point, the unit was literally jerked out of my hands.

Oh dear. Did I mention having a Windows Phone? Maybe I should have waved it around more. Anyway, I don?t think Microsoft guy number one quite knew what I was doing (you know, trying to actually use the damn computer the way I?d use a computer), so Microsoft guy number two didn?t catch on that by no means should I be allowed to hold one of these devices again. After more begging ? ?please can I hold it please please please can I hold it? ? I got another maybe 10 seconds to repeat what I did before. That got the unit jerked away again, with a ?Nice trick? remark.

The Hands-Off Museum

Nice trick? No, you know what?s a nice trick? Bringing out devices that no one can actually use. I know they work. I could see that one of the Microsoft guys was all logged into his. But why not let us actually use them, especially when you?ve made us wait from 10 to 60 minutes specifically, as we were told, so we?d all have some close-up time with Surface.

No journalist seems to have really used any of these at the launch event. None of the hands-on reviews that I?ve read, having been in that room and toured the stations, have anything that reflects any real hands-on activity to me. There?s plenty of careful photography that can give the impression that hands-on was going on. Some of it doesn?t even illustrate how the last station with the Surface tablets with keyboards in them literally had a rope to keep us away.

I remember once taking my kids to a museum where you weren?t allowed to touch things, something odd for them after years of being in hands-on museums. One of them remarked, quite seriously, ?I guess this is a ?hands-off? museum.? That?s what the Surface event was like, a hands-off museum.

But Windows 8 Tablets Are Intriguing

Frankly, I?m far more excited about Windows 8 tablets coming than the fact Microsoft has its own with a potentially fancy keyboard.

As I wrote earlier, to me the distinguishing point of Surface is Windows 8 itself, the fact that unlike the iPad, it looks to be a proper desktop computer tucked into a tablet. Can I really take one of these on the road, use it like a tablet, then plug back in at home or elsewhere to external monitors or keyboard to use like a desktop? I see some awesome in that.

Again, like I wrote before, if I could have only two of three tablets, I?d go iPad then Windows 8 and not Android, because Android?s not offering me anything I can?t already do on the iPad but with (to me) what?s not an elegant environment. Windows 8 is different, unique, seems to offer some compelling features even without the icing of a kickstand that goes ?click? and thin keyboard.

At the SXSW conference in March, Microsoft had a non-Surface Windows 8 tablet out in its booth. It was fascinating to see a tablet with a real file system:

It was nerdily amazing that I could even make a DOS prompt appear on it:

That was cool, and no one made me stop playing, not even Solitaire:

It?s a pity Microsoft didn?t have enough faith in Surface to let the journalists there actually have the hands-on that we wanted.

Postscript: Mary?s done a follow-up post explaining more about her hands-on experience. I said before, and I?ll repeat. My intent wasn?t to single her out. Her story was just latest of several publications writing about a hands-on experience, even though no one seems to have really used a live unit for more than a few seconds.

To me, putting a unit in your lap and pretend typing on it isn?t hands-on. Especially with this keyboard, that tells you nothing. I pretend typed on it myself at two different stations. That didn?t give me any sense of how typing on it really works, any more than playing pretend airplane when I was a kid actually let me fly through the sky.

My experience at SXSW with a Windows 8 tablet was far more satisfying, because it was just sitting there for anyone to use. Microsoft Surface is just a Windows 8 tablet with a newfangled keyboard. If people can really go hands-on with a Samsung Windows 8 tablet, or a Lenovo one, or an Acer one, there shouldn?t be anything that secret about Windows 8 itself on a Surface nor anything likely to crash, no particular reason not to let the journalists you?ve assembled use it.
