Facebook Identifies Burglary Suspect In Revealing Photo - NewsOXY

Facebook Burglary

Facebook Burglary ? A Facebook page revealed a photo of Isaiah Cutler, 18, and three teens, which made the job easy for the burglary investigation by Pittsburgh, PA authorities. They felt untouchable after breaking into Elliott?s Town Market on Chartiers Avenue in the West End making off with thousands of dollars worth of cash. They bragged after the theft, then posted the pictures on a public networking site for the world to see.

It all happened when Cutler and his three friends burglarized the local market of cash, cigarettes, candy and checks worth over $8,000.

Following the theft, they wanted their online friends to see just how cool they were, with photos of themselves showing the stolen goods and cash.

They really felt like ?Thugs? and ?Gangsters? that night, before something went down that would break up their little party.

It appears that Cutler?s family became concerned when they saw the photos. According to Detective Valerie Milie some of Cutler?s relatives called the police after seeing the pictures; he is currently in jail and has been there since Dec.12.

His only previous run-in with the law was an arrest for marijuana possession.

The younger suspects have not been identities because they are under age.

They are now in their parents? custody and will face a juvenile court soon.

Prior to the parents figuring out what happen, the police were on the hunt for the kids, due to their Facebook photo?s and surveillance video from the store.

Cutler will face a preliminary hearing on the Facebook burglary on Wednesday for multiple charges.

European markets eke out gains but Italy lags (AP)

PARIS ? European shares eked out modest gains Tuesday despite an earlier retreat in Asia, amid hopes of a solid Christmas trading period around the world, but Italian shares dipped as the country's key borrowing rate ratcheted up to worrisome levels.

Indicators out of the U.S., which can drive market sentiment the world over, have been stronger than expected, and there have been signs in Europe too of a solid trading. However, with the debt crisis in Europe still raging and growth expected to slow in China, investors have plenty to worry about.

A run of strong data from the U.S. ahead of the long holiday weekend had buoyed investors around the world but particularly on Wall Street ? the Dow Jones index closed last Friday at a five-month high last Friday.

In Europe, stock markets have recovered some ground of late too but most are still down on the year.

On Tuesday, France's CAC-40 rose 0.3 percent to 3,110 while Germany's DAX was up 0.2 percent at 5,891. The FTSE index of Britain's leading shares remained closed.

One market bucking the trend was Italy's FTSE MIB, which was trading 0.5 percent lower as the yield on the country's ten-year bonds struck 7 percent once again ? a level that is considered unsustainable in the long-run and eventually forced Greece, Ireland and Portugal into seeking outside financial help.

Italy is the eurozone's third-largest economy and is considered to be too big to save under current bailout facilities. Mario Monti, the coauntry's new premier got Parliamentary approval last week for a big austerity package that is intended to save the country from financial disaster.

Markets have grown increasingly fearful over the past few months that Italy will find it difficult to pay off its massive debts, which stand at around euro1.9 trillion ($2.5 trillion).

Despite ongoing worries over the spread of Europe's debt crisis to Italy, the euro remained relatively well-supported, trading 0.1 percent higher too at $1.3070.

Ahead of Wall Street's open, Dow futures were flat at 12,222 while S&P futures were also broadly unchanged at 1,260.

The narrow ranges across stock markets reflect light holiday trading conditions. Markets in Europe and the U.S. were closed Monday and trading is expected to be light most of this week though there could be some year-end movements on Friday as investors look to lock in any gains they may have made.

Earlier in the day, Asian shares fell after a disappointing profit performance by Chinese companies and a warning that Japan faces "significant downside risks" due to Europe's debt problems. That warning came from a Finance Ministry representative at a November Bank of Japan meeting, the bank said Tuesday.

Tokyo lost 0.5 percent to 8,440.56 while Seoul's Kospi shed 0.8 percent to 1,842.02. Taipei, Singapore and Jakarta also declined. Hong Kong and Sydney were closed.

China's benchmark Shanghai index dropped nearly 1.1 percent to 2,166.21 after the country's government reported that profit growth slowed at its major industrial companies. Total profit in the January-November period rose 24.4 percent over a year earlier, down 0.9 percent from the growth rate for the first 10 months of the year.

Oil markets were fairly subdued ? benchmark crude for February delivery was up 29 cents at $99.97 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

In Michigan, Decade Of Job Loss Is Finally Coming To End

Free Press:

Like a patient surviving a medical emergency, Michigan has the chance to learn some important lessons as it emerges from 10 straight years of job losses.

And like a patient learning to do push-ups and knee bends, Michigan must learn to become better educated and entrepreneurial in its business model as it recovers from this lost decade.

The state will add jobs in 2011 for the first time since 2000. The prolonged period of job losses tells many experts that even the state's core manufacturing industries require a more educated work force -- something the state may have trouble delivering.

Hang Wrapping Paper Rolls in a Closet Ceiling [Weekend Project]

Hang Wrapping Paper Rolls in a Closet CeilingIf you like to keep several rolls of wrapping paper on hand but don't have a handy place to store them consider screwing in anchors and running wire in a closet ceiling to create a gift wrap storage area that utilizes wasted space.

Flickr user Frank Farm screwed in four wall anchors and ran galvanized wire to support more than a dozen large rolls of wrapping paper. Now you can buy a dozen rolls of cheap gift wrap after the Holidays and have a convenient place to store it until next year.

NZ commando troops to leave Afghanistan in March (AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? New Zealand's elite commandos will pull out of Afghanistan in March, ending the Special Air Service troops' eight-year engagement in the war against insurgents.

Prime Minister John Key said the 35-troop contingent will leave the Afghan capital, Kabul. They have spent the past two years training the city's Crisis Response Unit soldiers to take the lead in securing the city.

Key said the troops had suffered the deaths of two SAS soldiers killed in action this year, the country's first combat deaths in a decade.

Key said in a statement that he regrets the soldiers' deaths, but he does not regret New Zealand's commitment to operations in Afghanistan.

London 2012 Olympics: Mo Farah returns to training

By Mike Dickson

Last updated at 5:40 PM on 21st December 2011

Mo Farah will allow himself one brief evening of razzmatazz on Thursday before resuming the monastic lifestyle that he hopes will bring him gold in next year?s Olympics.

The world 5000 metre champion will don his gladrags and attend Sports Personality of the Year in Manchester before flying straight out to Kenya, where he will spend Christmas away from his family as part of a four-week training trip.

'It isn?t nice being away from everyone because Christmas is a time when people get together, but it?s one of those things you have to do,' said Farah, who flew in from his training base in Oregon to launch his charity foundation.

If anyone expected him to use the occasion to make a grandstanding plea for votes in SPOTY they were predictably disappointed, such is his natural modesty.

'It just depends on what the public think. I hope I do well but there are 10 class people up there,' said Farah, for whom the nearest thing to a manifesto was a reflection on the season past.

'I have had one of the best years of my life, going from finishing sixth or seventh to winning the gold medal. Now I?ve got to keep improving.'

In any case SPOTY is a trivial matter compared to those he was discussing on Wednesday. Farah, born in Mogadishu before coming to Britain as an eight year-old, wants to use his enhanced profile to raise money to help those living in appalling poverty in Somalia (mofarahfoundation.co.uk).

He visited the country in September and with his wife Tanya resolved to do something afterwards to help out. The 28 year-old Londoner will take part in six to eight races before July, saying: 'The higher my profile the more helpful it is to raise money, and being Olympic champion would make it a lot higher.

'Seeing the situation touched me. I wanted to do something,' he said.

Triumph: Farah won gold in the 5,000m at the World Championships

'When I became a world champion I thought I could do something. There are 3.2million people there starving.

'A lot of people associate me with Somalia and I just want to do something.

'?4,000 is enough to build a well to support a village. We aim to build at least 10 of those wells in the next 12 months alone.

'We aim to provide enough food to feed at least 2,000 kids for a month. That's just a starting point for us.'

Farah was crowned 5,000m champion at the World Championships in Daegu in August and also finished with the silver medal in the 10,000m, smashing his previous best sixth-place finish in 2007.

The 28-year-old will enter next year's Olympics as one of Britain's best medal hopes and is eager to continue the rapid improvement that has made him a global force in long distance running.

'I've already put this year behind me,' Farah said.

'I'm a world champion and no-one can take that away from me, but I don't walk around thinking I'm world champion so I can eat chips or a burger. You have to stay disciplined.

'Hopefully I'll just keep on improving, it's not just about times - it's about medals. In your career you want to collect as many as you can.

'I'm really excited about the Olympics. Now all I can think about is London 2012.

'I want to keep pushing myself and hopefully I'll keep going up.'

Glory: Farah celebrates winning gold at the World Championships

Farah explains the decision to move his training base to Portland, United States, to work with new coach Alberto Salazar is the key to this year's success.

'When I decided to train in Portland I wasn't thinking it will take the pressure off me,' he said.

'It was genuinely to say "I've been finishing sixth or seventh, just half a second behind a medal, what can make the difference?".

'Going the other side of the world to be coached by Alberto has definitely made that one or two per cent difference.

'I could easily have stayed in the UK with my family in a nice house.

'But I was willing to take a risk. To go through that and get it right has been amazing.

'As an athlete to finish sixth or seventh but to keep coming back and finally win a gold medal and come second, is something I'd never thought possible.

'I would have been happy just to win, but breaking the British and European records have made it a great year.'

Record-busting motorbike will be jet engine on wheels

The way to crack the motorbike land speed record may be to put a jet engine on two wheels

RICHARD BROWN is a man with unfinished business. In 1999, he smashed the one-way speed record for a motorbike by hitting 584 kilometres per hour on the salt flats of Bonneville in northern Utah. But his claim on the outright world record - which is based on the average of two runs in opposite directions - was thwarted by technical problems.

Now he is trying again. He hopes to be the first person to exceed 720 km/h on a motorbike while achieving an average two-way speed of at least 640 km/h. Any old bike will not do: he will be using one that is jet-propelled.

While cars used in land-speed-record attempts, like the Bloodhound jet car that will attempt the challenge in 2012, and certain types of boat have taken advantage of jet thrust since the 1950s, all record-breaking motorbikes have used a conventional engine that drives the rear wheel.

This is because it is difficult to pack a jet engine into a two-wheeled frame capable of enormous speed with any degree of safety. Fast cars can be built around old jet fighter engines, but these are far too heavy to fit into a bike that must be balanced by the driver making tiny steering adjustments to the front wheel.

So for his new bike, called Jet Reaction, Brown has redesigned a 930-kilowatt helicopter engine to produce thrust instead of turning a rotor. It was "quite difficult", he says. "One is working with very fine tolerances in very difficult materials. If you get it wrong, destroying the engine is the most likely result."

Brown has also added his own reheat unit, or afterburner. It sprays fuel into the hot exhaust gases, causing it to ignite and generate yet more thrust. The idea sounds simple enough, though he says that getting it to work at something approaching its theoretical potential "requires much more development". The reheat burner sits above two canisters that deploy braking parachutes when needed.

Brown has a track record in ambitious jet engine projects. Following his 1999 record attempt he built a sub-orbital rocket, but the launch in South Africa had to be cancelled. He is also working on a gas-turbine-powered jet pack, similar to one developed by the US military, that he hopes will allow the wearer to remain airborne for 10 minutes.

Brown's 1999 record attempt involved his own Gillette Mach 3 Challenger bike, which featured a custom-built hybrid rocket engine. The attempt failed because soft ground forced the team to use tyres rather than the usual aluminium wheels. The tyres were only designed to withstand speeds of 380 km/h or so. Eventually the massive centrifugal forces on the rear tyre caused it to deflate.

The current motorbike land-speed record, 606 km/h, was set in 2010 by Rocky Robinson on a bike called the Ack Attack Streamliner. Such record-breakers feature elongated metal bodies - as does Jet Reaction - making them look more like giant bullets than motorcycles. They are also fitted with retractable stabilisers for balance when moving slowly or stationary.

Brown expects to carry out trials with Jet Reaction at a UK airfield in March next year, with an attempt on the world record back at the Bonneville salt flats pencilled in for 2013.

It won't be easy, says Mark Chapman, Bloodhound's chief engineer. "The biggest issue is air intake," he says. "You have to be sure the air flow through the jet is stable or the engine could surge, which could be dangerous."

Romney warms up tepid South Carolina campaign (Reuters)

GREENVILLE, South Carolina (Reuters) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney warmed up his tepid campaign in South Carolina on Friday with the endorsement of Republican Governor Nikki Haley, winning a key ally for a tough fight.

"We've been hoping for this for a long, long time," Romney said at a campaign event in Greenville with the Tea Party champion Haley standing at his side as he started a two-day tour of the early-voting state.

Romney has been lagging in South Carolina and his backers in the state have been urging him to campaign here more frequently to compete with rival Newt Gingrich, who has been leading in polls of the state's Republicans.

The state is critical on the political calendar. South Carolina holds the first primary in the South on January 21, the third contest, following Iowa on January 3 and New Hampshire on January 10.

While Romney is favored to win New Hampshire, it would be a nightmare scenario for him to lose both Iowa and South Carolina with the winner likely to have important momentum going into the January 31 primary in Florida, which could crown the ultimate nominee.

Romney has had difficulty in appealing to conservatives, particularly those who make up the lion's share of the Republican community in South Carolina. Haley could prove to be a valuable ally.

Haley, an Indian-American, was elected in 2010 as South Carolina's first female governor with the strong backing of Tea Party champion Sarah Palin. Though her popularity has sagged a bit in recent months, her endorsement was still coveted by Republican presidential candidates.

Haley told reporters she believes a spirited campaign of appearances and TV ads would turn around Romney's fortunes in the state. She said South Carolina voters are not concerned about Romney's Mormon religion.

"When it comes to Mormon faith, I will tell you that whatever the person's faith, that's not going to be an issue for my constituents, and the reason I know why is because South Carolina just elected a 38-year old Indian female governor," she said.

She told the crowd she settled on Romney after listening to all the contenders and determining he had the best qualities to be president, including her No. 1 priority: "I didn't want anyone tied to Washington."

Romney, who had campaigned for Haley when she won a come-from-behind victory as governor in 2010, said he hoped to emulate Haley's come-from-behind performance in South Carolina.

"I see every state as a battlefield," Romney said. "There's no place I can look at and say, 'this is going to be easy, I don't need to worry about that.'"

After days of hurling sharp attacks at chief rival Gingrich, Romney renewed his focus again on Democratic President Barack Obama and his leadership of the U.S. economy.

"This is a failed presidency," he said.

Democrats were eager to return fire, seizing on a comment Romney made earlier in the day in Sioux City, Iowa, to workers at a steel plant.

Romney, talking about popular entitlement programs, said until he got into government, "I have to admit I didn't know all the differences" between Medicare, a health insurance program for the elderly, and Medicaid, which helps the poor.

The Democratic National Committee, which is on a daily mission to disrupt Romney's campaign, quickly accused the wealthy former venture capitalist of being out of town with everyday Americans.

"There is not one thing in Mitt Romney's entire history that shows one bit of concern for middle-class Americans," said DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.

Romney told reporters on his plane that he had made a "self-deprecating understatement" and that in his younger days he had done some consulting work for various health care companies.

Shared flavor compounds show up on US menus, rare in Asian cuisines

ScienceDaily (Dec. 15, 2011) ? North Americans and Western Europeans love a good mix of alpha-terpineol, 4-methylpentanoic acid and ethyl propionate for dinner, flavor compounds shared in popular ingredients like tomatoes, parmesan cheese and white wine. Authentic East Asian recipes, on the other hand, tend to avoid mixing ingredients with many shared flavor compounds, according to new complex networks research from Indiana, Harvard, Cambridge and Northeastern universities.

In a search to uncover the patterns and principles people use in choosing ingredient combinations beyond individual taste and recipes, a team that included Indiana University Bloomington School of Informatics and Computing Assistant Professor Yong-Yeol Ahn looked at the key ingredients of 56,498 online recipes and then analyzed those ingredients for shared flavor compounds. The recipes came from three online recipe repositories: epicurious.com and allrecipes.com from the U.S. and the Korean menupan.com.

Over the past decades, some food scientists and chefs have developed a food pairing hypothesis which states that ingredients sharing flavor compounds are more likely to taste good together than ingredients that do not. Some application of this can be found at contemporary restaurants that successfully pair white chocolate and caviar, ingredients that both contain trimethylamine and other flavor compounds, or chocolate and blue cheese, which share at least 73 flavor compounds.

Ahn, who is also affiliated with the Center for Complex Networks and Systems Research operated by SOIC and IU's Pervasive Technology Institute, said that by creating a flavor network that captures the flavor compounds shared by culinary ingredients, the team could reformulate the food pairing hypothesis into a hypothesis on the graph-topological properties of recipes in the flavor network. Statistical tests can then be used to unveil the connectedness, or the lack thereof, of ingredients and flavor compounds.

In this case, they took 381 ingredients from the group of recipes, along with an associated 1,021 flavor compounds that contributed flavor to those ingredients, and created a flavor network where ingredients are connected if they share at least one flavor compound.

"What we showed was that the recipes in North American cuisine tend to share more flavor compounds than expected. The most authentic ingredient pairs and triplets in North American cuisine also tend to share multiple flavor compounds, while compound-sharing links are rare among the most authentic combinations in East Asian cuisine," Ahn said.

Their analysis also referenced that the number of actual recipes in use, on the order of about 106, was tiny when compared to the large number of potential recipes (over 1,015).

"We identified frequently used ingredients that contributed positively to the food pairing effect in North American cuisine, like milk, butter, cocoa, vanilla, cream and eggs," Ahn said. "These played a disproportionate role, as 13 key ingredients that contributed to a shared compound effect were found in 74.4 percent of North American recipes."

There were also ingredients in East Asian cuisine -- beef, ginger, pork, cayenne, chicken and onion -- that were the top contributors to an overall negative shared compound effect on food pairing.

One future goal of the research would be to build an accessible infrastructure using more detailed datasets that incorporate the quantity information of flavor compounds, again advancing the use of data-driven network analysis methods that have transformed biology and the social sciences to yield new insights into food science.

Another interesting venue of research is studying the evolution of recipes. A recently published recipe-evolution model suggested that the staple ingredients consist of old ingredients (founders) and highly "fit" ingredients.

"Among highly prevalent ingredients, we can see old ingredients that have been used in the same geographic region for thousands of years," Ahn said. "Yet there are also relatively new ingredients like tomatoes, potatoes and peppers that were introduced to Europe and Asia just a few hundred years ago. Though new, they are now staple ingredients."

Co-authors on the paper with Ahn were Sebastian E. Ahnert of Northeastern and Cambridge, and James P. Bagrow and Albert-L?szl? Barab?si, both of Northeastern and Harvard. Like the other authors, Ahn is also affiliated with the Northeastern Department of Physics' Center for Complex Network Research, and like Ahnert and Barab?si, with Harvard's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Center for Cancer Systems Biology.

Published Dec. 15, in Scientific Reports as "Flavor network and the principles of food pairing," the research was supported by the James S. McDonnell Foundation 21st Century Initiative in Studying Complex Systems.

FAMU drum major's death ruled a homicide

The drum major of Florida A&M University's famous marching band died of hazing, according to authorities who ruled his death a homicide Friday.

Robert Champion, 26, of Decatur, Ga., died Nov. 19 after a football game in Orlando, Fla.?The Orange County Medical Examiner's office said in a report obtained Friday by NBC News that Champion died of "blunt force trauma sustained during a hazing incident."

From the beginning, authorities suspected that hazing was involved in Champion's death. Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said at the time that criminal charges were possible.

Julian White, the band's longtime director, was fired four days later for what the university said was his inability to stop hazing in the band and the music department.

FAMU has a history of problems with hazing:

  • In 2001, a band member was hospitalized because of hazing.?
  • In 2006, fraternity brothers stood trial for alleged hazing.?
  • Earlier this year, the school confirmed that as many as 30 band members were released because of their involvement in hazing.
  • In October, police arrested three band members on charges that they beat a female band member so severely during hazing rituals that they broke her thigh.

Another person claims hazing by Florida A&M band

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said this week that its investigation of Champion's death had uncovered possible employee fraud and misconduct. An FDLE spokesman wouldn't discuss details of the investigation, but he told NBC station WESH of Orlando that it will now be handled separately from the criminal investigation of Champion's death.?

'Glee'-Cap: Christmastime At Klaine's Bachelor Chalet

Holiday episode steps it up with a black-and-white PBS show within the show.
By Jim Cantiello

On Tuesday night, "Glee" premiered its latest holiday episode, "An Extraordinary Merry Christmas," and kept the drama to a minimum. The little bit of plot revolved around the glee club having to choose between producing a PBS holiday special or keeping a previous commitment to a homeless shelter where Sue Sylvester volunteers. Thanks to the magic of Christmas, they were able to do both! And the old-school PBS variety show was a gut-busting diversion.

Taking place at Kurt and Blaine's "bachelor chalet," the two-act black-and-white Christmas special — shown in its entirety during the "Glee" episode — included "surprise guest stars" who couldn't quite figure out which camera was on, "Star Wars"-inspired characters rocking Springsteen and an Irish elf who loves Jesus. And it wouldn't be Christmas on "Glee" without an adorable duet from Klaine.

Meanwhile, Rachel and Finn enjoyed their first Christmas together, and the McKinley High diva learned a thing or two (or five) about charity.

So cuddle up with a loved one, light a fire and take in the final musical "Glee"-cap of 2011. Watch the embedded video below and sing along with these lyrics!

Sue Sylvester's alone this Christmas
Because Ryan Murphy killed her sister
Spends her time at a homeless shelter
Keepin' busy so she won't miss her

The glee club says they'll sing there
Spread around some cheer
But PBS asks them to air
A special this year
Artie's tapped to direct it
A boost to his career
They finish in time so they can go shine
And sing all sincere

There's no conflict on Christmas
No plot to be had
Just songs slapped together
To sell the soundtrack real bad
The special was crazy
All retro and cool
What better way to spend these magic days
That we call the yule

Rachel wants a million presents
Finn says, "Here's a pig"
He buys her stars and fancy earrings
"Let's give to charity," they commit
"Glee" finally lets Rory speak
Talked Jesus and wore a knit
I bet "The Glee Project" 's Cameron regrets
Saying, "I quit."

"Glee" rocked this Christmas
No attack on the day
Someone tell Rick Perry
To go away
Klaine's bachelor chalet made me laugh till I cried
Everything looks better in old black-and-white

[In the background to the tune of "Auld Lang Syne"]
Should old Charices be forgot
No Sebastian to be seen
I'll miss you "Glee" until you are
Back in 2012 on my screen

[Spoken word over the background vocals]
And so this holiday season, we give thanks to all the people and things on "Glee" that bring us joy
Like Heather Morris when she forgets that she's on camera
Or that Lea Michele duet with Brendon from Panic! at the Disco
And the "Glee" writers for keeping slut pig out of this episode
And Tina when she's forced to give exposition about last Christmas that we don't really need
"Glee," you're a sloppy bastard sometimes
But I can't wait to see you in 2012

What did you think of the "Glee" holiday episode? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Tetris App, Re-imagined for iPhone and iPad, Now Available

I have never been a huge Tetris player, but even I am aware of its addictive qualities. ?Sami loves it, for one, and they even joked about it in an episode of ?Northern Exposure? way back in the 90s when Clinton was President. ?Marilyn Whirlwind tells Joel that, yes, he did agree to let the Shaman Leonard observe him for a week. ?Joel asks when this so-called agreement happened. ??You were playing GameBoy?, she said. ??GameBoy?!! ?I would have agreed to anything when I was playing GameBoy!? ?And I have no doubt that the game he was playing was Tetris. ?Beware what you agree to while playing Tetris, that?s the lesson here. ?(I would have put up a clip, but couldn?t find it on YouTube. ?Oh well!)

Anyway, EA Mobile has launched a new version of Tetris, designed to ensnare a whole new generation of iPhone and iPod Touch gamers (and my generation as well, for that matter). ?You can check it out now, and it?s available on the iTunes app store for a single buck for the iPhone version, and $7.99 for the iPad version.

Full information below.

Boeing's Plan to Return to the Moon by 2022 (ContributorNetwork)

NASA Space Flight is reporting that Boeing made a presentation at the latest Global Exploration Workshop of a plan to return Americans to the moon by 2022, 50 years after the last astronauts walked on the moon.

The Boeing plan, which uses a "way station" located at the L1 point where the gravities of the Earth and moon cancel one another out as well as a reusable lunar lander is the first detailed approach to a return to the moon.

What would the way station look like?

The way station would be constructed at the International Space Station, using the remote manipulator arm. It would consist of a "Node4/DHS (Docking Hub System), an orbiter external air lock, a MPLM (Multi-Purpose Logistics Module) habitat module, and an international module." The various modules would be launched to the ISS with commercial rockets such as the Atlas V. Once assembled, a "space tug" would convey the way station to the L1 point.

How would the reusable lunar lander work?

A Space Launch System Heavy Lift launcher would deliver a fuel depot to the way station. Then a second SLS would deliver an Orion Multi Purpose Crew Vehicle and a reusable lunar lander. The lunar lander would take on fuel at the depot and then proceed on to the moon with the crew delivered by the Orion. The crew would conduct lunar surface operations, then return to the way station, transfer to the Orion, and return to Earth. Commercial launchers would top off the fuel depot as needed for subsequent lunar missions.

There is also a secondary plan that involves deploying the reusable lunar lander at the way station while it is built at the ISS. The SLS would launch an Orion MPCV and a Delta Cryogenic Second Stage (DCSS) to the way station. The DCSS would transfer fuel to the lander and then would boost it to the moon. As in the first scenario, the crew conducts lunar surface operations, then returns to the way station, transfers to the Orion, and returns to Earth.

The advantage of the second scenario over the first is that the long term storage of fuel is not necessary. The problem of preventing "boil off" of cryogenic fuel is one that would have to be solved before long term, space based depots become practicable.

What are the advantages of the Boeing plan?

Billions of dollars would be saved with a reusable lunar and one launch of an SLS per lunar mission. The way station could also be used as a base for running tele-operated robots on the lunar surface and deploying lunar surface infrastructure such as habitats.

What are some show stoppers?

The official plan, as articulated by President Obama, is still to bypass the moon and go to an Earth approaching asteroid. Also some analysts, such as Clark Lindsey, claim that there will be no money available for a way station and a reusable lunar lander and a heavy lift Space Launch System. But Lindsey's prediction of what the fiscal and political situation of 2018-2022 when this hardware would be developed and deployed remains idle conjecture, projecting the current situation into the future without changes that might be brought about by an election of a new administration.
